fringland Ltd, a peer-to-peer mobile VoIP based internet telephony network, released today an update of its native iPhone/iPod Touch app fring. This update (version 3.0.0.4), unlike any other usual update with some bug fixes and few minor enhancements, brings an exciting and long-awaited feature that every iPhone/iPod touch crave for. Yes, at last, now you can see your friends and talk to them live. However, video calls are limited to only fring-to-fring and fring-to-Sky calls only. Also, it’s one-way video call. As an iPhone user, you can just see your friend on the other end of the call, if they use a Nokia touch (such as X6, N97 mini, N97, 5800), N95, N95 8G and N82 devices or desktop with camera.
fring is first one to come up with this “Video Call” feature as of today for the world’s smartest phone, iPhone. The ultimate point is it’s FREE. No other VoIP apps offer the features that fring offers for free. Though it’s just a half the fun since it’s one-way video call. That’s because of the limitation of the iPhone hardware, as it doesn’t have a front-facing camera. At least, there is a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel that other VoIP apps, like Skype, would delight the customers with Video Calls feature in the near future. May be, If Apple would release the rumored 4th Gen iPhone (3,1) with front-facing camera of greater mega pixels than current versions, that time iPhone will still retain the reign as the leader of the smart phone for the coming few years.
Since fring voice calls are limited to only on WiFi, so would video calls.
