App Review: Twitter 360 ($2.99) – Integrates Augmented Reality With Tweeting

Twitter 360A handful of apps in App Store successfully integrated the augmented reality in it’s own core functionality, like Yelp, which originally helps user to search for places to eat, drink, shop, relax and play locally. When AR was added, food search became more intuitive things like “Where to find Sushi”; “Nearest Indian spicy food” becomes piece of cake.

Just like that a new application is released today with AR integrated into its core function, Tweeting. It’s Twitter 360 from Pressellite, which specializes more in augmented reality apps than any other iPhone development company out there. It’s good news for iPhone 3GS owners as the augmented functionality is not compatible for iPhone original, iPhone 3G or iPod Touch devices.

Twitter 360 is specifically developed for the iPhone 3GS that enables you to visualize your Twitter friends located in your nearby environment, thanks to a unique Augmented Reality functionality using the iPhone camera.

Twitter 360 is the first ever iPhone twitter client to use Twitter’s Geotagging feature to geotag your tweets. What’s amazing me is that Twitter officially released the Geotagging API to public on 19th November and the Pressellite team made it available in its brand new app within 12 days and got Apple’s approval too. To enable geotagging for your tweets from this app, you will have to turn it on in your twitter account in Twitter.com.

Here is the laundry list of the features that are available in this app.

- When you tweet from this app, it adds a note with the GPS location information. So your friends can see from where you tweeted it

- In Latest Tweets mode, you can see your friend’s latest tweets by keeping your iPhone in horizontal position and when you keep it in vertical position, you can see the location from where they were posted. When a tweet is selected, a blue arrow (compass) is displayed to show the direction and the distance to the location from where the tweet was posted. The distance is updated in real time as you walk in the streets.

- You can add your twitter friends to favorites by touching the Star icon

- In Locate my Friends mode, you can list all of your best friends and you can track geographic movements of your friends, you can now see where are located your nearby friends via Augmented Reality

- When you launch Twitter 360, a small bird will localize your exact position and update the “location” field data on your Twitter account with the coordinates, only if you want

- The application is fully compatible with Google Map. It is possible to locate your nearest Twitter friends from your position on Google Map within the application

- Switch off the geolocalization option in the setting to be in “invisible” mode. Your friends won’t be able to see where you are anymore. Your tweets won’t be geotagged

If you expect to use Twitter 360 as your fully featured client for tweeting, nope it’s not for you, so go and shop another app. But if you would like to experience a different approach in tweeting, you have to grab this one for sure.

The Augmented Reality functionality is only available to iPhone 3GS users. This application does not work on other iPhone / iPod Touch models for the moment.
