Does Knocking Live Video App Approval Hint AT&T’s iPhone Exclusivity Deal End?

As you may aware, Knocking Live Video app, which uses the forbidden private APIs to enable live video streaming over Wi-Fi and 3G, gained approval from Apple’s App Store after the decision had come “directly from the top.” The app was rejected a month ago for unauthorized use of the private APIs by quoting that it was against its policy on the use of private APIs. But the developer Brian Meehan knocked the company’s head Steve Jobs’ door with a persuasive email and got a nod of approval. Now it’s available in App Store for free.

Knocking’s usage of live streaming video is very particular, as Ars Technica explains, something which may have had something to do with it being approved while other apps like Qik haven’t been able to break down the streaming wall:

“Knocking Live Video uses an interesting take on streaming video. Unlike Qik, which is designed to stream video to multiple clients, Knocking streams from one iPhone to another. (…) You simply launch the app and “knock” another iPhone user with Knocking Live Video installed. That user will receive the “knock” via push notification. Once answered, you can then stream live video directly to them. An iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G is required to transmit video, but other iPhones and iPod touches can receive and view the stream via WiFi.”

So far Apple rejected many apps that will be a burden to AT&T’s network due to the data connection usage, but by approving an app like Knocking Live Video, which will stream live video between iPhones, will not lessen the traffic anyway. If the decision to allow the app came from the high command, even though reason is a passionate email, it wouldn’t please AT&T. May be the decision was triggered by AT&T’s shifting focus from iPhone, which is clear in its advertising in the recent weeks, as the carrier likely readies itself to lose exclusivity in the United States. So Apple might also want to part its way from AT&T by not heeding to its concerns about network overloading.

Could this mean T-Mobile or Verizon will be getting iPhone next year in US?
